Abstract

One of the key features of 5G is high-speed communications using the millimeter-wave (mmW) band. Beamforming using phased array antennas is essential to overcome the large attenuation and less diffraction of mmW. This paper describes the principle, basic configuration, and implementation technology of mmW phased array in 5G. In addition, a 28 GHz beamforming IC and a phased array module developed using 65 nm CMOS technology are described. In 6G, ultra-high-speed communications over 100-Gbps are targeted using the sub-THz band (100-300 GHz). Phased array is still a key technology to realize 6G, and its potential and technical challenges are also discussed.
