説明
This paper focuses on the history of the counting-rods, which were a tool of calculation used in East Asia since antiquity. In particular, the paper will review the theory that a special form of the rods was developed in ancient Japan. The special form is that of a counting-rod with grooves engraved on its sides to indicate numbers. This form was described as early as the 6th century in the Shushu Jiyi (数術記遺). However, there is no evidence to confirm that these Japanese engraved rods were counting-rods, and they were not related to the Shushu Jiyi. We have disproved these facts by finding counterexamples in the excavated artifacts.
