This study investigated the perceptions and coping strategies for loneliness among 111 Chinese residents in Japan through a questionnaire survey. To measure loneliness, we used a direct question that used the word “loneliness” and an indirect question that asked three questions without using the word “loneliness.” Approximately 50% of respondents reported feeling lonely in the direct question, compared to 40% in the indirect question. Text-mining analysis of the free descriptions revealed that loneliness was often associated with a lack of interpersonal connections, such as “no one who understands or sympathies,” “few social contacts,” “acting alone,” and “being away from parents.” On the other hand, there were also several positive descriptions, such as “selfenjoyment,” “own time,” “subjective and needs to be felt,” and viewing loneliness as a normal part of life, such as “life experience/state” and “inevitable.” Furthermore, coping strategies for loneliness included “entertainment and leisure,” “activities and outdoor activities with friends,” “indoor activities,” and “communication with friends and family.”
