In this paper, I aim to identify how urban dwellers can make discoveries in their familiar places by using different modes of transportation to move around their living areas. In section 1, I will c larify why this question is important in the context of urban aesthetics, a relatively new sub field of environmental and everyday aesthetics. In section 2, I will overview how the relationship between aesthetics and mobility has been discussed. In section 3, I will examine Jonathan Maskit's argument, which is the main target of the critical study of this paper. I will point out two problems with Maskit's argument in section 4. The first problem is that he presents a significant category of “serendipity” that is established through the dialectic of familiarity and novelty but does not consider it in detail. Secondly, he also concludes that walking and similar modes of transportation are aesthetically privileged. In section 5, after interpreting Maskit's urban discoveries as object based, i.e., on the experience of discovering new elements that we have never found before, this paper will consider network based discoveries. If we already known each element of our route, we can find new networks constituted with them and feel serendipity. Section 6 will present the possible implications of our discussion for urban practice. Section 7 will conclude the paper.
