Abstract

This paper discusses using Machine translation (MT) in History Reading class to understand the primary documents or English paper. MT has made remarkable progress in recent years, and with the inevitable start of online classes inflicted by the pandemic in 2020, the use of MT by students has become an issue. Although the use of MT is controversial in the field of foreign language education, the more accurate MT becomes, the more difficult it becomes to prohibit its use, and the mainstream view opts that English education should aim to work in line with MT. On the other hand, the need to improve language skills is not limited to the field of foreign language education. In the field of Western History as well, language skills are essential for reading and understanding primary historical documents. Although access to them has been dramatically improved in Japan thanks to the availability of online archives, there are still many students who are uncomfortable with foreign languages. This paper clarifies the merit and demerit of using MT in studying History based on the findings from experimental practice in History Reading class.
