Abstract

[Introduction] Implementation intentions (IMPs) is composed of if then plans, "if part" represents a specific stimulus or event, and "then part" indicates the behavior that one wants to become a habit. The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of an intervention medium that applies the if then plans on application to promote physical activity. [Methods] Forty-eight People participated in the study (Intervention group,n = 23; Control group,n = 25). The verification period was 5 weeks. After the participants answered the baseline questionnaire, the intervention group downloaded the application to their smartphone and set up an if then plans. Afterwards “if part” explained to set events that are easy to encounter in daily life. Moreover, they set a reminder notification time to encourage the implementation of the action plan. The control group instructed them to maintain their normal lives. [Results] The if part set by the intervention group specified normal activities of daily living. In the “then part”, there were many walking activities such as stretching, using stairs, and walking fast. The descriptive answer showed that reminders can help you remember to implement the if then plans. A comparison of the intervention group and the control group showed that the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group in terms of moderate physical activity and motivation. [Conclusions] It was suggested that applying if then Plans to the application promotes physical activity and habit formation.
