抄録

The courtship episode of Utsuhomonogatari features a number of unique individuals. Many of them were ruined by the grief of Atemiya’s marriage to the Crown Prince. But Minamotono Nakazumi was the only one who actually died. He was Masayori’s seventh son, his mother was an imperial princess. He was a promising young man. But his tragedy began when he fell in forbidden love with his half-sister Atemiya. From his first appearance in the story, he was gripped by melancholy. He composed many wakas trying to hide his love for her. He often composed wakas about scenes in which his overflowing tears become rivers. Nakazumi befriended Nakatada and they became brothers-in-law. Their conversation is witty and sophisticated, quoting Waka and Chinese poetry. They grew closer, but finally Nakatada did not realize the truth of Nakazumi’s love. Nakazumi finally died, grieving over Atemiya’s marriage. Even after his death, he appeared in her dreams. His presence casts a dark shadow over the story.
