Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the situation and challenges of accepting African students in Japan from the perspectives of people involved in study abroad projects, African students, and their supervisors through interviews. This study uses two national universities in Hokkaido and Kanto region as case studies. The interview results indicate that Japanese culture and advanced technologies serve as attractive factors for African students. However, the low rankings of Japanese universities in global university rankings and the complexity of the study application system discourage African students from studying in Japan. The challenges faced by African students studying in Japan include language problems, learning difficulties, and cultural issues. In particular, there is culture shock associated with the unique Japanese culture. The discriminatory problems they face as minorities are also pronounced. Additionally, it is difficult to consider employment in Japan.
