Description

A quarter of a century has passed since The Association of Japanese Geographers established a disaster response committee in 2001. During this time, our society has responded to many disasters, including the Great East Japan Earthquake and the heavy rain disaster in western Japan. We have also examined the dissemination of hazard maps and topographical classification maps, and disaster prevention education in geography education from a geographical perspective. Today, when the sustainability of Japanese society is once again being questioned and the contribution of geography is required, this symposium will look back on the past history and discuss future prospects for the development of disaster geography. Immediately after the Noto Peninsula earthquake occurred on New Year's Day 2024, we began disaster response. We need to continue to consider how our society should respond to disasters. It is also important to pursue the theory of disaster geography and reflect it in disaster prevention education. This symposium looks at the future of geographical disaster response, research, and education.
