Description

This study examines the admission requirements for English language proficiency at U.S., U.K., and Australian universities. Although institutions accept multiple English proficiency tests, the score conversion methods vary among universities and from the official published guidelines. Therefore, we propose a comprehensive conversion table. This table is grounded in the Cambridge English Scale and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It incorporates scores from widely accepted tests such as IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo English Test, and PTE-Academic, as well as EIKEN, GTEC, TEAP (CBT), and TOEIC, which are common in Japan. The table spans the CEFR levels ranging from A1 to the uppermost limit of C1, offering particular utility for those at the A2 and B1 levels, which are the most common levels among Japanese high school students. This conversion table can serve as a helpful resource for university admissions and for grading English courses at the university level.
