This paper reports on the Kobe Japanese Language Program January （hereafter KJP）, a short-term Japanese language teaching program of approximately three weeks by the Kobe University Global Education Center （hereafter GEC）, up to its launch in FY 2019 and its four sessions up to FY 2022. KJP was designed using the results of interviews conducted at partner universities in Australia, to focus on the potential need for study abroad at Kobe University and promote acceptance from the region. The program aims to differentiate itself from existing programs at other universities, with the theme of finding links between the Kobe region and Australia. It consists of Japanese language and area studies classes centered on the Kobe region. The course was originally designed with an emphasis on hands-on experience, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic that spread rapidly in Japan from the end of January 2020, we were forced to offer the second and third years of the program online. This brought several new challenges, including how to bring this sense of ‘hands-on’ experience and guarantee opportunities for interaction with Japanese people, which would have occurred naturally if the course had been held locally. The teaching innovations used to bring the event online were generally well-received by the participants, and in addition, issues that informed us about holding the event locally also became apparent. We received a lot of cooperation from‘ former international students’ in the implementation of the regional study classes, which allowed us to present on the ‘internationality’ and ‘livability’ of the Kobe region and show us a working model for career development that makes use of Japanese language study.
