説明
This paper explores how Vesna Goldsworthy (1961-) critically responded to the disparaging Balkan images accumulated and reused in the English discourses between the late 1990s and early 2000s. Born and raised in the former Yugoslav Belgrade, Goldsworthy moved to London with her English spouse when she was 25. While engaging herself in reporting the war in Yugoslavia at BBC Radio World Service, the author worked on her research project on the Balkan representation in English literature when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and finally began writing her life narrative for her littleson. Reading her autobiography, Chernobyl Strawberries: A Memoir (2005), in parallel with her scholarly monograph and papers, which criticized the invention of “Ruritania”, this study discusses the way she presented her autobiographical “I” which is culturally and linguistically hybrid and firmly embedded in the context, and how she attempted to dismantle the Huntingtonian myth of the clash of cultural tectonic blocks.
