Abstract

This paper investigates the use of onomatopoeia in mystery novels. It finds that there is roughly one onomatopoeic word per page (700 characters) in these novels. Common onomatopoeia between two novels of the survey are about 15%. The most frequently used onomatopoeic forms are of the ABAB, AQBri, and ABri types, seen in both novels and almost the same trends were observed in both cases. The morphological patterns of less frequently used onomatopoeia extend to as many as 28 types, indicating a wide variety. In mystery novels, onomatopoeia are mainly used as adverbs of manner and very few as others. It's rare for mystery novels to create new onomatopoeia. Finally, this preliminary research suggests that individual differences among authors are one of the factors in the characteristics of onomatopoeia used.
