Abstract

A quarter-wave plate composed of periodic crossed slots is analyzed using the FDTD method. Taking advantage of both waveguide and localized surface plasmon resonances, a twin-peak transmittance property is realized, leading to broadband characteristics. High transmittance of more than 90% is obtained by adding a thin dielectric layer on the top of a metal film, even when the metal film is loaded on a semi-infinite substrate. Slight difference in the slot lengths yields 90° phase difference, resulting in an ellipticity of less than 3 dB with a loss of less than 7% over the O band.
