<p>　In this paper, I consider what kind of abilities are essential for novice and mid-career Japanese teachers to advance their careers. First, the responsibilities and duties of teachers at the preparatory educational institution where I work are clarified, and categorized as follows: exercising discipline; teaching (classes, examination guidance); research (teaching material development, presentations, writing of papers); service (leadership, committee work inside and outside the school, etc.); accountability (portfolio creation and publication). On that basis I conclude that at the school where I work, the ability to carry out these tasks more efficiently is essential for career advancement by Japanese language teachers. In conclusion, I note that in other educational settings as well, one must continually strive to create an environment in which Japanese language teachers can grasp their responsibilities, monitor their current situation, and grow professionally, while periodically readjusting their personal goals.</p>
