Abstract

This paper shows moral reasons to avoid recommending transformative experiences from majorities to minorities. A transformative experience is an experience that has two characteristics: we cannot know what it is like before we have it (epistemic transformation); we cannot evaluate the experience before we have it because it changes our personal preferences and values (personal transformation). Some transformative experiences, such as parenthood/childrearing and sexual experiences, are socially valued. These positively valued transformative experiences are sometimes recommended by the majority who have had the experience to minorities who have not. This paper argues that such recommendations are prima facie morally wrong from two aspects. First, they are unreliable recommendations because of cognitive biases about their experiences. Second, if the recommender has adaptive preferences, the recommender cannot give good reasons for the recipient to have the experience. Therefore, there is reason to avoid recommending transformative experiences because they fail to provide good reasons for the recipient.
