We present a historical review of the term "psychology." The literature review suggests that the term originated in the 16th century. Theologian Gerhard Schnell and Italian physician and philosopher Pier Nicola Castellani each used the Latin term "psychologia" in their books published in 1525. The term "psychologia" had been used in philosophy to refer to mental science through centuries and was translated in Japanese by Amane Nishi as "shinrigaku" in 1875. The term "shinrigaku" referred to mental science in philosophy at the time because it was before the foundation of scientific psychology by Wilhelm Maximilian Wundt in 1879.
