Description
This paper examines whether the market mechanism works in the wheat and barley market for adjusting supplies among varieties in the case of Fukuoka prefecture, Japan under a private distribution system. The results are as follows. The market prices well reflect the ‘mismatch’ between the scheduled quantity of supply and the preferred quantity to purchase for each variety in the market. However, such price signals cannot smoothly derive the planting adjustments among varieties of wheat and barley. The reason for this is that the incentive of the market price is diminished by the subsidy policy. Consequently, irrespective of the market demand, farmers tend to avoid varieties which are difficult and/or costly to cultivate.
