Description

Anti-Americanism during the early phases of the postwar occupation of Japan was remarkably muted. After more than a decade of war, few Japanese people had the means and motivation to vigorously oppose the American occupation. However, as the American occupiers "reversed course" after 1947, student radicals began organizing protests by appealing to anti-Americanism. This paper will examine how anti-Americanism played a prominent role in the formation and development of the early Zengakuren, how this led to the alienation of Zengakuren students from the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) leadership, and how anti-Americanism was later adopted and modified by the JCP.
