Description
In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching, the Personal Growth Approach has been widely introduced as a way to not only enhance language, literary, and cultural skills but also to promote personal growth. This study examines adopting this approach in the Japanese as a Foreign Language (JFL) classroom, using Japanese fiction as the text genre. This paper reports on the findings of this class experiment, and more specifically, how this approach can be incorporated in JFL teaching. This is the fourth study into the usage of literary texts in JFL thus far conducted by the author; the first study focusing on a linguistic and cultural approach, the second on the teaching of honorifics and speech styles, and the third on the story grammar approach.
