Description

Peripheral neuropathy induced by taxanes is a common side effect and reduces patients quality of life. Prior attempts to reduce these side effects, mainly numbness, dysesthesias, paresthesias, have been unsuccessful. We evaluated whether there is benefit for peripheral neuropathy induced by paclitaxel using fireless moxibustion. Weve examined 9 patients treated with paclitaxel with breast cancer, ovarian cancer, individually. The patients put fireless moxibustion by themselves 3 times per week and continued for 12 weeks. Neurological assessment were performed by Semmes-Weistein monofilament test, NRS, POMS and SF8TM. As a result, there was a statistically significant reduction in the severity of peripheral neuropathy as measured by NRS. In conclusion, the result suggests that fireless moxibustion treatment may reduce the severity of peripheral neuropathy induced by paclitaxel, especially during early phase of these side effects.
