<p>本稿は、手塚治虫とやなせたかしの戦争体験と、それが彼らの作品世界や人間観に与えた影響を明らかにするものである。手塚は、勤労動員中に大阪大空襲を経験し、爆弾の炸裂と機銃掃射によって殺戮される一般市民の惨状を目の当たりにした。やなせたかしは、陸軍兵卒として日中戦争に従軍し、強烈な飢餓を経験した。それぞれの戦争経験から、手塚は、生命の儚いがゆえの尊厳を終生の創作のテーマとし、やなせは最も耐えがたい苦痛である飢餓を、文字通りの〈献身〉によって救うヒーローを創造した。</p>
