 TAIHEIYO CEMENT CORPORATION developed the Taiheiyo Sludge Drying System (TSDS), which enabled massive treatment of sewage sludge. TSDS is a drying system which uses a kiln-preheater line for extracting heat source gas and treating exhaust gas, and the crushing flash dryer is used for drying sewage sludge.<br>　 Important points of TSDS operation are effective drying of sewage sludge and explosion prevention of dried sludge. Using the concept of limiting oxygen concentration (LOC), control criteria of the TSDS exhaust gas are set. These criteria are upper limits of temperature and oxygen concentration.<br>　Commercial plant of 2t/h TSDS is installed in our plant, and it is demonstrated that TSDS is useful for drying sewage sludge without an adverse impact of kiln operation. By analyzing gas and heat balance of TSDS operation, current TSDS performance is evaluated and ability of its improvement is also mentioned.
