Description

This paper focuses on what is known about the life history, ecology, and behavior of the Japanese rhinoceros beetle Trypoxylus dichotomus. Five subspecies (T. d. septentrionalis, T. d. takarai, T. d. inchachina, T. d. tsuchiyai and T. d. shizuae) are currently distributed in Japan, and most previous studies have been conducted using the mainland subspecies, T. d. septentrionalis. Other subspecies have only been used for phylogenetic analysis, with few field-ecological studies concerning subspecies in each island.
