Abstract

The present study investigated the effects of promoting marital communication of parents with an infant with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual disability. The mother complained about the father and her anxiety raised after talking with a doctor and other parents. The father tended to talk little to the mother. The purpose of counseling was said to be “raising the child together.” The counseling, which was based on parents' records about the child's behavior in their home, included attempts to increase the father's thoughts and ideas, and the mother's statements about her husband's opinion. The therapist reinforced their statements and avoided to present strategies. The results indicated that the father's thoughts and ideas were increased, and the mother spoke based her husband's statements. The parents became able to decide how they would work on parenting. Consequently, their appropriate interactions with the child were observed, and it seemed that daily conversation between the couple increased. These fındings suggest the effıcacy of behavioral counseling to promote couple's communication behavior proved to be effective in helping guardians of ASD.
