Description

The linear motor car is a well demonstrated example of an application of superconductivity. The linear motor train is the general term for a railway vehicle that uses a linear motor. The system which uses superconducting magnets is called the superconducting magnetic levitation system (superconducting Maglev). From the beginning, the development of the superconducting Maglev has proceeded with the purpose of attaining velocities beyond the limit of conventional trains using wheels. Furthermore, the superconducting Maglev system is an excellent high−speed mode of transport in terms of energy conservation and ecology. This paper presents the process of the development of the superconducting Maglev system and its principles and characteristics, particularly from the perspective of superconductivity applications.
