Abstract

In order to realize high-capacity data storage up to terabit per square inch, it is necessary to overcome the diffraction limit of light and thermal instability, i.e. the super para magnetism limits, of magnetic materials. Hybrid recording onto magnetic media using near-field light with a couple of tens nm diameter is a promising method. In this report a newly developed near-field plasmon probe named the “nanobeak” with high conversion efficiency of far-field light is introduced. Hybrid recording onto Co/Pd-multilayer bit-patterned media using a near-field optical head with the nanobeak is explained.
