Abstract

An array of microplasmas, which are small and with complicated shapes, acts as a functional metamaterial through a spatiotemporal configuration whose design is based on the dispersion relation of propagating electromagnetic waves. In such a functional metamaterial, microplasmas behave as a dynamic medium with a negative permittivity and are controlled by the external power used for plasma generation; their parameters are adjustable, and they can be switched on and off. Specific examples discussed in this report include dynamic band-gap materials and a medium with a negative refractive index.
