Abstract
<p>Conventional point-to-point WDM transmission techniques are continuing to be developed to provide optical communication systems with greater capacity. In addition, ring, cross-connect, and photonic routing networks are being vigorously investigated with a view to realizing more advanced optical systems. In this article, I report recent advances in photonic functional devices based on silica planar lightwave circuits, which we are developing for these advanced systems. I describe dynamic compensation devices for chromatic and polarization-mode dispersion and gain non-uniformity in high-speed transmission, and optical label processing devices and optical CDMA encoder/decoders for advanced photonic networks.</p>
