Abstract

The recent progress in earthquake prediction research in Japan is reviewed. The most outstanding progress in this field is the establishment of the ‘asperity model’ that is based on the finding of slow-slip and asperities on plate interfaces. Through the use of the asperity model, a variety of earthquake occurrences can be explained, and successful simulations of the occurrence of earthquakes have been achieved. Such simulation, together with a dense observation network, will contribute to the quantitative prediction of earthquakes.
