Description

X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) is frequently used for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of the material of cultural objects. However, there are many objects that have not yet been analyzed because they are immovable or are liable to be damaged during transport. In order to solve this problem, a portable XRF system has recently been developed, which enables elemental analysis of any object at any place. This new portable XRF was applied for the non-destructive identification of the materials of several Japanese national treasure paintings. In this paper, analytical results for the “Scroll paintings of the tale of Genji”, “Red and white plum blossoms” and “Mural paintings of Takamatsuzuka tumulus” are described.
