Abstract

The novel application of a femtosecond laser (FS laser) to biomedical measurement is described. Although the peak power of the FS laser is sufficiently high to cause nonlinear optical effects such as second harmonic generation (SHG), the average power of such a laser is lower than that of a conventional continuous wave laser. This feature is advantageous for noninvasive biomedical measurement. The orientation and distribution of collagen fiber in the skin, tendon, dentine and bone have been determined utilizing a polarization SHG light signal induced by the FS laser. The FS laser is also used to generate a terahertz electromagnetic wave pulse (THz pulse) of sub-picosecond duration. The resulting THz pulse has been applied to the noncontact measurement of local water content in the human skin.
