Abstract

Biometrics is a method for machinery to identify or verify persons by using physiological or behavioral characteristics, such as fingerprints, irises, and vein patterns, which are unique to individuals. It has become popular as a convenient personal authentication technology. Artifacts, such as paper, plastic cards, and semiconductor chips also exhibit intrinsic patterns. Artifact-metrics is a method for authenticating such artifacts using a technology similar to biometrics. In this article, the basic mechanisms of biometric and artifact-metric systems, and how to evaluate their security are reviewed.
