Abstract

The present study attempted to examine the effect of the extracts from chicken neurohypophysis and pituitary glands of African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) on oviposition in egg-laying hens. The extract of neurohypophysis derived from head within 10 min after the decapitation (fresh chicken neurohypophysis) was found to induce the oviposition in a dose-dependent manner. The oviposition was induced within 3 min after the injection of only 1/8-diIuted extract from one fresh chicken neurohypophysis. Amount of the oviposition-inducing hormone arginine vasotocin (AVT) in fresh chicken neurohypophysis was measured using the method of radioimmunoassay. The total amount of AVT decreased to half of its starting amount under 4°C during the first day and then did not change for three days. The amount of AVT in frozen chicken neurohypophysis and the amount of AVT in pituitary gland of Xenopus laevis were 50-100-foldlower than the amount of AVT in fresh chicken neurohypophysis, but AVT in the neurohypophysis derived from canned chicken heads was hardly detected. Furthermore, the extracts derived from frozen chicken heads and Xenopus laevis induced the oviposition. The present study suggests that the induction of oviposition in laying hens using the extraction from the neurohypophysis of chickens and the pituitary glaud of Xenopus laevis are usable experiments at school.
