Description

Most patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are slow and unproficient at performing tasks, even if they are not physically disabled. The purpose of this research was to examine the main cause of the speed reduction of tasks performed by patients with TBI.
Subjects: 14 outpatients with TBI with practical use of both hands.
Procedure: Neuropsychological tests and vocational tests were performed. All scores were converted to Z-scores using the averages and standard deviations of normal population. Results: Processing speed (WAIS-III) showed the most severe reduction. Scores of the GATB categories were worse in the patient group. Motor functions according to the upper limb and finger tests were the worst in the GATB. The processing speed test (WAIS-III) included cognitive and motor functions of the upper limbs and fingers.
Conclusion: In patients with TBI, motor skills cause delays in processing speed, leading to reduction in task performance speed.
