Abstract

The start of Sumo dates back approximately 350 years during the Edo Period in Japan. Sumo events have been run by the Japan Sumo Association, which is approved by the Japanese government. However, Japan Sumo Association has been challenged by series of scandals and misconducts in recent years. Among the troubles, violent assault on junior persons has stood out the most, demanding urgent risk management. Recent violent assaults have been reasoned to both external and internal factors. The traditional way sumo conduct their training, which is referred to “Keiko”, and how “Keiko” takes place inside closed and private sumo stables that lack transparency are seen as part of the external reasons for the misconducts. Measures have been taken to improve the transparency of sumo stables for the prevention of these misconducts. Internal factors that lead to misconduct need further discussion, as it may be more complicated since it involves excessive mentorship referred as to “Kawaigari”, which is connected to ethical and psychological aspects of individuals who take part in the violent acts. Along with the external factors, risk assessment of internal factors will be closely evaluated in order to suggest effective ways for risk management.
