<p>Academic journals that have played an important role as researchers’ media of research outputs for hundreds of years have entered in the era of full-fledged digital transformation through computerization and open access. In the current transition period, Japanese academic societies and academic journals urgently need to establish data policies and need to be compatible to preprint servers, open access, and associated copyrights and licenses. In addition, preparations based on a long-term perspective on the assumption that the framework of academic journals and peer review itself will change will be necessary, and will be proactively engaged in digital transformation of academic society and publishing functions.</p>
