Abstract

This paper analyzes urban structure of worldwide major cities focusing on population distribution. To reveal the degree of equal distribution and that of clustering, two indices, Gini and Moran coefficient, are employed. A global perspective is employed in this study, where 1,710 cities with population over 300,000 are analyzed and classified using these two coefficients. The main findings are as follows. In general, populated cities tend to be highly clustered and to be concentrated in some sub-areas, while less populated cities tend to distribute equally and spread widely. Regional differences among countries are also revealed.
