Abstract

In this paper, I compare the incest of Miki and her father to that of Miki's fiancé K and his older sister L in Kurahashi Yumiko's novel Seishōjo. Through this comparison, I show that although the novel appears to present an uncritical resolution of the female Oedipus complex, in which Miki relinquishes her desire for her father by marrying a man who resembles him, it is actually a far more radical story in which Miki, a masochist, actually uses her desire for her father, and even the law of the incest taboo, in her search for pain/pleasure. Furthermore, in order to obtain the pain/pleasure she craves, Miki replaces her marriage to K with a masochistic contractual relationship. I furthermore show that Miki's masochism not only exposes the incest taboo as merely a “law” to maintain the patriarchal family system, but also threatens to deconstruct male-centered sexual pleasure and the marriage system itself.
