Description

Cope holes which are used to the crossing weld in steel bridges cause high stress concentration and therefore decrease fatigue strength of welded joints. Although conventional post weld improvement techniques may increase the fatigue strength of welded joints with cope holes, they are relatively difficult to access weld toes inside the cope holes. This study investigates the modification of cope hole details for post weld improvement techniques: ultrasonic treatment and needle peening, based on a questionnaire survey on the conventional and modified cope hole details targeting steel bridge fablicaters, an X-ray residual stress measurement on the vicinity of weld toes of the cope holes, and a fatigue test with conventional and modified cope holes.
