Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the stagnation of commercial accumulation districts in front of stations in the metropolitan suburb area. The paper examines the cases of Honatsugi and odawara where withdrawals of the large-scale stores have occurred. As a result of analyzing number and ratio of the medium or small stores between 1985 and 2002, numbers of external capital stores, such as chain stores, have been increasing and uniformity of the station front areas and the suburbs is advancing. In addition, the analysis of unused sites after withdrawals of stores shows that the increase of chain stores has the relevance to the trend of unused lands. In order to maintain the commercial centralities of the station front areas, uniformity of the areas should be controlled. To do so, it is important to attain differentiation and individualization of the areas by supporting and raising local capital stores.
