Abstract

Physico-chemical comparison between argic horizons and cambic horizons of Red and Yellow soils had not been conducted at nationwide scale in Japan. Therefore, characteristics of argic horizon had not been well defined in Japanese soil taxonomy system. To locate the taxonomical position of argc horizon in Japanese system, we elucidated the physico-chemical differences between argic and cambic horizons using database analysis. Additionally, we assessed the validity of soil colors criterion i.e. "Red" and "Yellow" in the diagnostic criteria of Japanese system. Silt to clay ratio and cation exchange capacity (1kg clay base) of argic horizons was significantly lower than those of cambic horizons. Furthermore, it appeared that argic horizons developed on the stable landscape while cambic horizons developed on the mountain or hill ranges. These results indicated that development of agric horizons requires long pedogenetical time and landscape stability, and it is thought to be an indicator of soil weathering in Japan. Additionally, database analysis revailed that a diagnostic criterion which is solely based on the soil color was not a valid criterion in the high category of soil classification system. However, after distinguishing higher category using the presence of argic or cambic horizons, soil color was useful as the diagnostics criterion of lower category. Therefore, we recommended that higher categories (soil groups) of Red and Yellow soils are distinguished by the presence of argic or cambic horizons, and lower categories of those are identified from the soil colors.
