The speciation of iron in aerosols in rime and snow samples collected from remote mountain areas was conducted using an X-ray absorption fine-structure method with a laboratory-type X-ray absorption spectrometer. Iron in rime and snow samples mainly formed ferrihydrite, which is a ferric oxyhydroxide, according to comparisons of reference materials. It was suggested that iron was oxidized from primary ferrous minerals, such as chlorite and illite, found in loess, which is a source material of natural aerosol. Because ferrihydrite has a relatively higher solubility than chlorite and illite, the bioavailability of iron in aerosol can be increased by the uptake of aerosol into wet depositions.
