Description

In this study, we analyze the effect of point-of-use drinking water treatment on calorie intake. This is an approach for examining a hypothesis that an improved health environment decreases calorie requirement, proposed by Deaton and Drèze (2009), where the effect of preventing diarrhea to reduce calorie wastage was discussed. We study this through micro household survey data in India by using a propensity score matching method. The result cannot reject this hypothesis, and it is found this effect is more significant in lower expenditure class households.
