Abstract

Stephen Crane's famous short story "The Open Boat" is based on his own ordeal at sea for thirty hours after the Commodore, on which he was to reach Cuba, sank off the coast of Florida. The theme of the story is the relation of man to nature. The four survivors of a shipwreck drift at sea in a small dingy, and finally three of them safely reach the shore. However, Billie the oiler, who is physically the strongest, dies. In this paper we will consider the ending of this story referring to Billie's death.
