Description

This article reports on the pre-conference excursions of the IMA 2014 meeting held in Sandton, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa. We visited the Vametco Vanadium Mine, Kroondal Chromium Mine, Rustenburg Chromium Smelter and Eastern Platinum Concentrator in the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex. Vanadium occurs in magnetitite layers hosted in anorthosite at the Vametco Mine. The LG6 and LG6A chromitite layers hosted in pyroxenite are mined in the Kroondal Mine and the ores are provided to the Rustenburg Smelter to produce ferrochrome. The Eastern Platinum Concentrator processes only the UG2 chromitite ore in the MF2 (mill-float-mill-float)-based circuit.
