Description

One hundred and thirty-nine hips in 87 patients with osteoarthritis of the hip were investigated to determine the isometric hip abduction torque value required for a negative Trendelenburg sign (NTS). The following measurements were performed : 1) isometric hip abduction torque (Nm), using a REHAMATE; 2) the body weight moment (Nm), which was obtained by multiplying 0.82 times that of patient's body weight by the distance from the center of the femoral head to the pubic symphysis; 3) the Sharp angle; and 4) the center-edge (CE) angle. Results indicated that for most cases the torque value required for a NTS was equivalent to the body weight moment or 0.8 Nm per kilogram of patient's body weight; however, for the hips with a Sharp angle more than 49 degrees and a CE angle less than 1 degree, more torque values should be required : preferably, more than 150% of the body weight moment and 1.2 Nm per kilogram of patient's body weight.
