Description
Grundtvigianism is the ideology which was spread to all Nordic countries in the 19th century, and it developed within their historical and social backgrounds. This paper focuses a case of Norway and tries to show differences from Denmark with referring to the relation between local people, the Church and grundtvigianism. It was about the middle of 1840s, same period of beginning of Scandinavism, which Grundtvig started to be accepted in Norway. But young grundtvigians were eliminated from the Church due to the pressure from the State Church which had strong relation with pietistic lay people. So folk high schools which established after 1864 could not reject conflicts with local people and church. But in that case, leading persons in the folk high schools commonly engage to a political action which is rarely seen in Denmark.
