Abstract

Recently, gear skiving has started to be employed in practical gear machining fields. A cutter is fed along the rotating axis of the gear to be cut while the cutter and the gear rotate in a specific relationship between rotation speeds. The direction of cutter feed motion is normally determined as the direction of the elements of the relative velocity between a cutter and a gear along a gear rotating axis. Then, feed motion in such a direction avoids collisions between cutters and gears regardless of depth of cut. However, feed motion which has an opposite direction to the usual one can be applied, if depths of cut is sufficiently small to prevent collisions between cutters and gears. In the present paper, a calculation method to confirm the collisions between them was proposed. A comparison of calculated cutting tool parameters showed that the unusual feed direction in a particular case provided better effects on depths of cut and rake angles than the usual one. However, the unusual feed direction did not affect tooth traces in an experiment using gears without heat treatments.
