Abstract
Until recently gear skiving was not a major gear cutting method because of short tool life, low machine rigidity, and so on. However, improvements of machine tools, materials and coatings of cutters have made it possible to be applied in practical gear machining fields. One of the features of gear skiving is to produce lead modification, which is difficult with other gear machining methods for internal gears. In the present study, a skiving simulation of gear flanks with lead crowning was performed. Simulation results showed that the crowning process made internal gear tooth flanks to be twisted (bias-in). The effect of reground cutters on tooth profile bias could be negligible. And in a simulation result, collisions between a gear and a cutter could be avoided by adjusting shaft and/or offset angles during cutting motions to reduce profile bias.
